A GoPro for your Brompton?

Quite a few years ago I owned a GoPro. I enjoyed using it to film rides, do time lapses and strap it to my Brompton when participating in things like the Brompton World Championships and London Nocturne. I have however given some serious thought to getting one for very different reasons.

Today on my my commute a van made an inconsiderate pass but what almost made my heart stop was the stupidly close pass it made of another cyclist about 50 metres ahead  of me!

Lots of car drivers have dash cams and I regularly see motorbikes and cyclists with helmet cams. I suspect that most of these are for similar purposes to a dash cam.

It is a pretty sad sate of affairs to even have to consider this but I think I might. Of course saying that I am not overly sure what I would do with the footage?

What do you think? Do you have one and what do you use it for?

  1. I have a Garmin Virb, which is similar to a GoPro, and you can get a combined mount for it and a GPS device.
It records a GPS file alongside the video, so you can combine the GPS file with the footage to produce a video with speed and altitude.
I use it to record rides rather than as an evidence gathering device, however I do find wearing a camera does have a preventive effect.

  2. I have two Dash cams installed in my car and my partner's car. The little one travels in that car, so I feel its a extra little bit of safety. Even driving my own car I have noticed some madness with other drives during the lockdown and the same drivers not giving the proper space to overtaking the cyclists. So if something did happen to myself or another road-user. It might be helpful to the GardaĆ "Police" to use to prosecute the dangerous driver.
In my free time I'm on the bike allot, I try to keep to the cycle lanes and canal paths. A head cam would be handy, in case I got knocked off the bike. Though it might give you a false sense of security. The best way is to ride defensively and expect the unexpected, I find.

On a happier note a new Orange Brompton is being sent to me next week. I will have to upload a photo of it. Great Blog, Thank you, I have learnt lots about living with a Brompton :-)
