Continental Contact Urban tyres

My tyre of choice for years has been the standard Schwalbe Marathon. I have tried the plus version of the Marathon but have not ever got on with them. Today I fitted a brand new pair of Contact Urban tyres by Continental.

I fitted them to my Titanium Orange Brompton and the fitting process was very easy. Lots of people have been saying good things about these tyres for several months and more recently. It was however a friend in Canada who swayed me. He rides his Brompton more or less all year round in conditions that would have most of us reaching for a box of tissues. He has been raving about these tyres for the last 3x Zoom calls we have had, so I took the plunge.

Going for a quick test ride, they roll well and do not induce that back of the mind fears Kojaks do.

Hopefully as few longer rides in the near future will really test them but early impressions are good. Watch this space...in a couple of months for an update

Stay safe out there people!!

  1. would be nice to know how the contis do with grip in wet conditions? the marathons are excellent in this respect but i find their rolling too sluggish. a good and really grippy winter tyre it is however. the new standard fitted marathon racers are also rather good in this respect, have fantastic rolling but have found their casing too vulnerable as now two of them have broken close to their bead after few weeks of use.

    1. Hello there. Many others have reported they are pretty good in the wet - much like the'Four Seasons' tyre they do. The jury is out for the moment for me personally as I have only ridden them twice in the wet so far. The last time being yesterday and it did pour down for a good 10 minutes. So far I have not really noticed any difference grip-wise between them and my usual standard Marathons.

  2. Hi Mr Orange. Thanks for all your posts, so many of which are peppered with great photo's. Can you tell me what the metal disc on your fork is please? (First pic on your 'continental tyres post). I have four Bromptons in all, but none of them have got this. They have a small cylinder welded on to the fork which is where I assume the disc would be attached, but there's no disc on any of them. Three of the bikes were bought new, so I know for sure the discs have never been on these bikes. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

    1. It is used to keep the cables away from the tyre when you don't have mudguards. I take them off in the summer for a few weeks and just leave it on there.

    2. Ah! Thanks for solving that one. All my Bromptons have mudguards! (But I suppose you surmised that because of my query!). Appreciate you taking the trouble to clarify. Very best wishes. Al

    1. I haven't done that yet. I have cycled lots of miles on them and they are great tyres. My Cloud Blue (commuter hack) has been through the worst of London weather September 2022 up until now, with no issues (or punctures).
