You may be aware that not long ago, I sold my Cloud Blue Brompton. I always liked the colour, and it served its purpose admirably as a commuting and foul-weather bike, but let’s face it...it just wasn’t orange enough. A few weeks ago, it was the turn of my Orange Special Edition; I suppose the universe thought it was the right time.
As you know, I’m somewhat of a Brompton enthusiast, owning an Orange G-Line, a Brompton 12-speed electric, and my Orange Superlight. The simple fact is, however, that I hardly ever rode my Special Edition once the Electric and G-Line came along. The other three bicycles were like an enthusiastic group of concert performers, while the Special Edition sat quietly as the shy, reserved member of the group. So, I was ready to let it go, albeit rather unexpectedly.
At some point over a. years ago on a Sunday ride in London, in a fit of spontaneity, I must have mentioned to fellow cyclists that I had a Brompton (one careful owner, of course) for sale. At that juncture, I was more likely referring to the unsold Cloud Blue, blissfully unaware of what was lurking in the future. Fast forward and wouldn't you know it? That very same lady who spoke to me, reached out to inquire about my bike’s availability. We eventually met up, and she test rode it with a sense of exhilaration; it was like watching a child on Christmas morning unwrapping a...Brompton! After demonstrating the folding and unfolding process (complete with the utmost seriousness, as if I were imparting ancient wisdom) it was hers. Off she cycled towards Regent's Park, beaming with her treasure.
Now, I am not one to be overly attached or sentimental about my Brompton bicycles. I know many of you are, and I do admire that level of emotional investment (though I suspect you may require a therapy session or two!). For me, it has always been about the memories attached to each ride - the very reason I write this blog in the first place.
I vividly recall taking possession of this bike midweek and embarking on its inaugural journey: an overnight ride from London to Whitstable. Within just a few hours, I had already eclipsed the 100-mile requirement for its first service. Back then, this was still free. It whisked me away on several Dunwich Dynamo escapades, a myriad of nocturnal London to Brighton rides, and an innumerable collection of adventures, each one a delightful tale tucked into the corners of my memory.
Now residing in my stable of three Brompton bicycles, my G-Line stands as my favourite London adventure companion, capable of tackling any surface and weather. The Brompton Electric is my trusty steed for when I fancy covering ground with a bit of fervour or if I encounter a hill that dares to challenge my right knee. My Superlight, meanwhile, retains its status as my summer bike, ready to soak in the sun and maybe take part in a Brompton World Championships if Brompton HQ dished out medals to all participants!!
Off for new adventures |
While I believe having just one Brompton is entirely sufficient, I must admit, the more, the merrier - especially when they each seem to serve a deliciously different purpose. I sincerely wish the new owner of my former bicycle all the best, and may she create her own fantastic memories. After all, that’s precisely what this Brompton life is all about. It really is inevitable!
Until next time, stay safe out there people!
