The countdown has begun people! On Saturday, 5th September 2026, the Brompton World Championship (BWC) returns to London, this time at the iconic Lee Valley VeloPark in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It promises to be the biggest championship yet and yes, I’m going!
A better venue
For the first time, the Brompton World Championship will take place at Lee Valley VeloPark, a legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The circuit (I presume is the rather good track that winds around the Velodrome) provides the perfect stage for fast racing, dramatic overtakes, showboating and plenty of oohs and aahs for spectators. The move to Lee Valley also marks an interesting evolution for the championship. It was previously held at Coal Drops Yard near Kings Cross. In fact, this was going to be the venue for the BWC back in June, but it was cancelled. I took part in this event in 2024 read about that one here and did not really care about doing it again. This new venue is better.
More riders
This year's event is expected to welcome 750 riders, making it the largest Brompton World Championship ever - assuming they sell 750 places which they probably will. Competitors from all across the UK and the world will line up for the famous Le Mans-style start, sprinting to their folded Brompton bicycles before unfolding them in a race against both the clock and each other. After nine qualifying heats, the fastest riders will progress to the men's and women's championship finals, where the coveted title of Brompton World Champion 2026 will be decided.
It's More Than Just Racing
The Brompton World Championship has always been about much more than crossing the finish line first. Unlike traditional cycling races dominated by Lycra and carbon fibre, the BWC celebrates personality. Riders are encouraged to wear imaginative outfits inspired by their hometowns, favourite films, professions, or simply whatever makes people smile. Some - ahem - will wear clothing mirroring their favourite colour! The result is a day where serious racing meets creative expression, producing an entertaining cycling event to say the least.
New for 2026
This year's championship introduces a new addition to the normal individual race. The BWC Relay Race, where teams of four riders compete in relay format sharing one bike. (No way I would share my Brompton with anyone, so that is out for me)!
Should you go
The Brompton World Championship has become one of cycling's most distinctive events because it refuses to take itself too seriously while still delivering genuine sporting competition. I mean, I have already used one of my many fountain pens to write down a training schedule and what tweaks I can make to my Brompton. With the backdrop of the Lee Valley VeloPark, record participation and the famous blend of speed and spectacle, it looks set to be a showcase of Brompton cycling.
Will there be a medal!?
Medals used to be a thing at the Brompton World Championships, but the recent events have been devoid of all things suspended from a ribbon. I really hope that Brompton rise to the occasion and get a medal round the neck of all participants. If not, I know that many will be disappointed. If you are reading this Brompton HQ, come on!
Whether you're planning to race, cheer from the sidelines or soak up the atmosphere, the 5th September 2026 should already be marked in your calendar. The folding bikes may be compact, but the personalities, community and excitement on display will be anything but! This could be my year…you never know!
