A Midnight Brompton Adventure: less than two weeks away.

The nocturnal ride season is almost upon us, and if you’ve been following my escapades, you’ll know I have a soft spot for the odd night ride - especially those that whisk me away to the coast. In less than two weeks, I shall be dusting off one of my trusty Brompton and pedalling off into the night!

Our first adventure will take us to Leigh-on-Sea, almost the classic Southend but not quite. We will gather in central London around 23:30, where the air will be thick with anticipation. After a ride briefing and a safety talk that will make you feel like you are about to embark on a secret mission, we will endeavour to set off just after midnight.

This ride is a tried and tested formula, originally dreamt up by the legendary Simon Legg. He had a brilliant idea, and a few brave souls turned up. Although Simon has since hung up his organising hat, the rides continue, much to our delight.

So, why do I love these night rides so much? Well, the challenge is a big part of it. Cycling through the night, reaching our destination around 08:00, and then having a cheeky breakfast (if you fancy) before heading back to London is no small feat. There is a certain swagger that comes with telling your work colleagues or family members what you intend to do over the weekend, especially when they look at you as if you have just announced you are off to the South Pole. Completing it on a Brompton? Well, that just adds a sprinkle of madness to the mix!

Let us not forget the ride itself. London, dressed in its night attire, is simply stunning. The first couple of hours involve cycling out of the urban jungle and into the serene countryside. The skies are remarkably clear, thanks to the reduced light pollution. As the temperature dips, you might spot all sorts of wildlife, and your high-lumen bike lights will illuminate charming country lanes, quaint villages, and the occasional windmill that looks like it has just stepped out of a postcard.

Of course, there are moments when the group thins out, and you find yourself alone, following the distant taillight of a fellow cyclist. It is a bit like being in a film - just you and the open road, with only the sound of your wheels spinning and the occasional rustle of nocturnal creatures.

These rides attract a delightful mix of people from all walks of life and ages. You can chat as much or as little as you like, and it is always lovely to share a few words with someone you only see on these nocturnal escapades.

As many of you know, I am not exactly a rural dweller, so returning to London is always a treat. As the city begins to wake, I enjoy cycling back home at a leisurely pace, smug in the knowledge that the people I pass have no idea about the adventure I have just had.

The transition into morning is one of the aspects of these rides that keeps many coming back. The views can be nothing short of amazing.

Once home, it is the usual routine: a quick hello to everyone, a bite to eat, and then off to bed to catch up on the sleep I’ve missed.

The anticipation for this ride is palpable, and preparing for it is half the fun. Once I have completed the ride, I will be sure to share all the details in a follow-up blog post, so keep your eyes peeled!

Until next time, stay safe out there, people!
